How to write music comments for KS4 (Years 10-11)
- Cover performing, composing and listening separately. A confident performer may find the listening paper harder, so name which area carries the strength and which needs attention before the final exams.
- For compositions, comment on development: does the student extend and vary ideas rather than repeat them? Suggest one technique, such as a modulation or a contrasting middle section, as a concrete next step.
- Listening answers on the studied pieces need precise detail. Target naming the feature and where it happens, for example a change of texture at the chorus, rather than a general description.
Watch out: Avoid praising natural talent or a lovely voice, or treating private instrumental lessons as the only evidence. Describe skills seen in class, such as playing accurately in an ensemble, that every student can develop.
The four levels describe how secure, accurate and independent the learning is, never a grade. Excellent suits precise, perceptive work that applies ideas to unfamiliar contexts; Good suits usually accurate with occasional guidance; Developing suits sometimes, or with a worked example; Needs support names what is emerging and the help that works. Show the level through the work rather than writing the level word.
