KS4 Science Report Comments (Years 10-11)
Science combines knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics with working scientifically: planning investigations, carrying out practical work safely and accurately, analysing data, drawing conclusions, evaluating methods and using maths such as units, equations and graphs.
Below are 13 sample sentences for KS4 (Years 10-11): two strengths and one next step for each of the 4 comment levels (Excellent / Good / Developing / Needs support), plus a tip for families. They are a small selection from the 288 science sentences in the full pack. Copy one, then add a detail only you know about the student.

Excellent E
Strengths
- Evaluating theories with maturity, [Name] can explain how the model of the atom developed and why the theory of evolution came to be widely accepted.
- [Name] handles the mathematical side of science with assurance, from calculating means and gradients to working with standard form.
Next step
- Comparing [his/her/their] extended answers with a model and rewriting one paragraph to add the missing linked step would push [Name]'s explanations further.
Good G
Strengths
- [Name] can interpret graphs and tables in exam-style questions and often describes trends using figures from the data.
- With occasional guidance, [Name] rearranges equations correctly and works through multi-step calculations in a logical order.
Next step
- [Name] should practise applying knowledge to unfamiliar contexts in exam-style questions, first identifying which part of the course the question links to.
Developing D
Strengths
- Reading values from graphs in exam-style questions is going well, and [Name] is learning to use those values to support a description of a trend.
- Rearranging simple equations is a skill [Name] is working on, and it goes well when there is a worked example to follow.
Next step
- Practising unit conversions in exam-style calculations, such as kilojoules to joules or grams to kilograms, will help [Name] avoid slips in calculation questions.
Needs support N
Strengths
- A revision routine is starting to form with support, and [Name] is beginning to use flashcards to learn key terms for the course.
- Reading scales on equipment such as rulers and thermometers is improving, and [Name] makes good progress when shown how.
Next step
- Practising short answers that include one key word and a reason introduced by 'because', checked by the teacher, will help [Name] build towards the final exams.
Support at home
- A walk outdoors is a chance to ask your child to name living things, explain a food chain or say why puddles dry up faster on a warm day.
How to write science comments for KS4 (Years 10-11)
- Target extended answers: does the student build a logical sequence of points with scientific vocabulary, or list facts? Suggest planning the steps before writing, for example when explaining how vaccination leads to immunity.
- Comment on the practical activities that are part of the course: whether the student can describe a method clearly enough for someone else to repeat, identify sources of error and suggest improvements.
- Mathematical skills often separate secure answers from partial ones. Name the specific step, such as rearranging an equation, converting units or calculating a gradient, and suggest practising it across all three sciences.
Watch out: Avoid comments that only list the topics taught. Describe a skill or idea the student shows, such as explaining a result using evidence from a graph, so the comment works whichever science the student studied recently.
The four levels describe how secure, accurate and independent the learning is, never a grade. Excellent suits precise, perceptive work that applies ideas to unfamiliar contexts; Good suits usually accurate with occasional guidance; Developing suits sometimes, or with a worked example; Needs support names what is emerging and the help that works. Show the level through the work rather than writing the level word.
What Science covers
In these comments, science covers these behaviours:
- knows and explains key ideas in biology, chemistry and physics, using models and correct scientific vocabulary
- plans investigations, identifies variables and makes predictions (working scientifically)
- carries out practical work safely and accurately and records observations and measurements
- analyses data, spots patterns and errors, draws conclusions and evaluates methods
- uses mathematical skills in science: units, equations, graphs and calculations
