How to write geography comments for KS4 (Years 10-11)
- Use case studies as evidence. Note whether the student supports answers with place-specific detail, such as named locations and figures, and suggest learning two facts for each case study covered in class.
- For fieldwork, describe how the student handles the enquiry: justifying methods, presenting data, drawing a conclusion and evaluating how reliable the results are. Fieldwork sites vary by school, so focus on the skill.
- Longer evaluation answers reward a clear conclusion. A target such as weighing social, economic and environmental impacts before deciding which matters most gives the student a structure to practise.
Watch out: Avoid general remarks about caring for the environment that could fit any student. Name a geographical explanation or skill instead, such as interpreting a climate graph or explaining coastal erosion.
The four levels describe how secure, accurate and independent the learning is, never a grade. Excellent suits precise, perceptive work that applies ideas to unfamiliar contexts; Good suits usually accurate with occasional guidance; Developing suits sometimes, or with a worked example; Needs support names what is emerging and the help that works. Show the level through the work rather than writing the level word.
