How to write collaboration and respect comments for Grades 9-12
- Credit mature discussion skills: disagreeing with an idea rather than a person, citing evidence and inviting quieter classmates in. These skills carry into seminars, internships and jobs, which makes them meaningful to older students and families.
- On long group projects, note whether the student shares the workload and speaks up when falling behind. A next step such as agreeing on tasks and deadlines in a shared document builds a professional habit.
- For leadership roles in class, clubs or teams, mention how the student treats peers while leading. Respectful leadership is specific evidence that teachers and counselors may later draw on when writing recommendations.
Watch out: Recounting a specific conflict or naming the other students involved. It can breach their privacy, and the details date fast. Describe the expectation being worked on, such as a respectful tone in group chats, and the plan in place.
At Outstanding (4), use words like consistently, independently or without being asked; at Satisfactory (3), use usually, generally or with few reminders. At Needs improvement (2), say what happens sometimes or with reminders, and at Unsatisfactory (1), describe the behavior factually along with the support in place, such as daily check-ins. Do not write the mark name itself; describe the behavior behind it.
