How to write work completion and time management comments for Grades 9-12
- Describe how the student handles heavier loads, such as overlapping tests, an AP or dual-enrollment course, a part-time job or a sport. The next step can be a weekly plan the student builds without a parent overseeing every task.
- Note whether class work time is used well, since students who use it take less work home. Cite a concrete moment, like drafting an essay during a work period or finishing lab analysis before the bell.
- Where late work affects progress, say so plainly and point to the late and make-up work policy, which varies by school. High schoolers can be expected to email the teacher and arrange a catch-up plan themselves.
Watch out: Listing every missing assignment by name. The list dates quickly, and families can already see it in the online gradebook. Describe the pattern instead, such as late work clustered around long projects, and give one fix.
At Outstanding (4), use words like consistently, independently or without being asked; at Satisfactory (3), use usually, generally or with few reminders. At Needs improvement (2), say what happens sometimes or with reminders, and at Unsatisfactory (1), describe the behavior factually along with the support in place, such as daily check-ins. Do not write the mark name itself; describe the behavior behind it.
