How to write work completion and time management comments for Grades 6-8
- Middle schoolers may be juggling several teachers' deadlines for the first time. Note whether work comes in on time for your class specifically, and suggest a fixed homework time each afternoon as a routine families can support.
- For projects, mention whether the student meets checkpoint dates such as the topic, the outline and the draft. Breaking a project into dated steps is a next step middle schoolers can manage with adult check-ins.
- After an absence, younger students may not know to ask for missed work. Say what the student did, such as checking the class website or the absent folder, and suggest one step, like seeing the teacher the morning they return.
Watch out: Listing every missing assignment by name. The list dates quickly, and families can already see it in the online gradebook. Describe the pattern instead, such as late work clustered around long projects, and give one fix.
At Outstanding (4), use words like consistently, independently or without being asked; at Satisfactory (3), use usually, generally or with few reminders. At Needs improvement (2), say what happens sometimes or with reminders, and at Unsatisfactory (1), describe the behavior factually along with the support in place, such as daily check-ins. Do not write the mark name itself; describe the behavior behind it.
