How to write self-management and growth mindset comments for Grades 6-8
- Name a coping strategy suited to early adolescence, such as a short reset break, writing a worry down before a quiz or using a quiet spot during work time. Families can use the same strategy for homework stress at home.
- Goal setting in advisory works best when small and measurable, like finishing quiz corrections within a week. Mention one goal the student set and whether it was met, rather than general praise for a positive attitude.
- Describe perseverance through visible behavior: trying a second strategy on a hard problem, rereading a confusing passage or returning to a task after a break. These actions show sixth to eighth graders what growth mindset means in practice.
Watch out: Speculating about anxiety, mood or home life. A report comment is not the place for diagnoses or guesses. Describe the observed behavior, such as leaving tests unfinished, and the support offered, then raise wider concerns with the counselor privately.
At Outstanding (4), use words like consistently, independently or without being asked; at Satisfactory (3), use usually, generally or with few reminders. At Needs improvement (2), say what happens sometimes or with reminders, and at Unsatisfactory (1), describe the behavior factually along with the support in place, such as daily check-ins. Do not write the mark name itself; describe the behavior behind it.
