How to write collaboration and respect comments for Grades 6-8
- Describe group work in terms of roles and fair share: did the student contribute to the lab, poster or presentation and help the group finish? Assigned roles like materials manager or recorder make a clear next step at this age.
- Middle school friendships shift quickly, so keep comments on observable conduct, such as including a new classmate in a team activity or following norms in the hallway and at lunch. Leave friendships and other students' names out.
- Some students are using a school device or shared documents for the first time. Mention respectful posting on class discussion boards or in shared files, and keep the expectation simple, such as comment on ideas, not people.
Watch out: Recounting a specific conflict or naming the other students involved. It can breach their privacy, and the details date fast. Describe the expectation being worked on, such as a respectful tone in group chats, and the plan in place.
At Outstanding (4), use words like consistently, independently or without being asked; at Satisfactory (3), use usually, generally or with few reminders. At Needs improvement (2), say what happens sometimes or with reminders, and at Unsatisfactory (1), describe the behavior factually along with the support in place, such as daily check-ins. Do not write the mark name itself; describe the behavior behind it.
