How to write engagement and effort comments for Grades 6-8
- Name the class setting where participation shows, such as a lab, a small-group discussion, an elective performance or a team activity. Middle schoolers see several teachers a day, so one setting from your own class makes the comment credible.
- For students still adjusting to middle school, credit small signs of engagement like volunteering once a period or asking a question after class. A next step such as one comment or question per class is concrete for this age.
- Describe careful work in terms sixth to eighth graders recognize: checking the directions, labeling a diagram or finishing every part of a project. This gives families something specific to look for when homework comes home.
Watch out: Writing needs to try harder. It sounds like a judgment of character and gives no direction. Say where effort drops, such as the second half of long assignments or test review days, and what would show more effort.
At Outstanding (4), use words like consistently, independently or without being asked; at Satisfactory (3), use usually, generally or with few reminders. At Needs improvement (2), say what happens sometimes or with reminders, and at Unsatisfactory (1), describe the behavior factually along with the support in place, such as daily check-ins. Do not write the mark name itself; describe the behavior behind it.
