How to write organization and preparation comments for Grades 6-8
- Mention lockers and transitions: whether the student gets to each class on time with the right binder, folder and device. A color-coded folder or binder section for each class is a fitting next step for sixth to eighth graders.
- Refer to the planner or agenda students fill in during advisory or at the end of class. Say whether entries are complete and whether the student checks them at home, so families know what to look for each evening.
- Middle schoolers may be new to the online gradebook. Suggest a shared weekly look with a family member, so the student learns to spot missing work while an adult is still close by to help.
Watch out: Judging organization by how a binder or desk looks. Some students organize digitally and do it well. Describe the outcome instead, such as having notes ready for review or finding an assignment as soon as it is asked for.
At Outstanding (4), use words like consistently, independently or without being asked; at Satisfactory (3), use usually, generally or with few reminders. At Needs improvement (2), say what happens sometimes or with reminders, and at Unsatisfactory (1), describe the behavior factually along with the support in place, such as daily check-ins. Do not write the mark name itself; describe the behavior behind it.
