How to write organization and preparation comments for Grades 9-12
- Focus on digital organization: clearly named files, shared folders, saved drafts and notes kept by unit. Much high school work lives on devices, so say whether the student can find past work when a test or project needs it.
- Expect older students to track their own grades. A next step such as checking the online gradebook every Friday and emailing about anything missing shifts responsibility from the family to the student.
- Name the calendar habit that fits a busy schedule: entering test dates, practices, work shifts and project deadlines in one place. Punctuality to first period or after lunch is also worth noting if late arrivals are a pattern.
Watch out: Judging organization by how a binder or desk looks. Some students organize digitally and do it well. Describe the outcome instead, such as having notes ready for review or finding an assignment as soon as it is asked for.
At Outstanding (4), use words like consistently, independently or without being asked; at Satisfactory (3), use usually, generally or with few reminders. At Needs improvement (2), say what happens sometimes or with reminders, and at Unsatisfactory (1), describe the behavior factually along with the support in place, such as daily check-ins. Do not write the mark name itself; describe the behavior behind it.
