How to write self-management and growth mindset comments for Grades 9-12
- Describe how the student uses feedback across a full cycle: revising an essay draft, completing test corrections or preparing for a retake where offered. Retake and revision policies vary by school and teacher, so describe only what your class allows.
- Address phone distraction factually and name the routine that helps, such as the phone face down or in a bag during work time. Keep it about focus and results; rule-breaking belongs in a separate conversation.
- High school stress can come from balancing courses, activities, jobs and college planning. Note how the student manages a demanding stretch and suggest a concrete tool, such as a study schedule before exams or a talk with the counselor.
Watch out: Speculating about anxiety, mood or home life. A report comment is not the place for diagnoses or guesses. Describe the observed behavior, such as leaving tests unfinished, and the support offered, then raise wider concerns with the counselor privately.
At Outstanding (4), use words like consistently, independently or without being asked; at Satisfactory (3), use usually, generally or with few reminders. At Needs improvement (2), say what happens sometimes or with reminders, and at Unsatisfactory (1), describe the behavior factually along with the support in place, such as daily check-ins. Do not write the mark name itself; describe the behavior behind it.
