KS2 Computing Report Comments (Years 3-6)
Computing covers algorithms and programming, predicting and debugging, logical reasoning, using technology to create and present content and data, and using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, including knowing where to go for help.
Below are 9 sample sentences for KS2 (Years 3-6): one strength and one next step for each of the 4 comment levels (Extending / Confident / Developing / Beginning), plus a tip for families. They are a small selection from the 119 computing sentences in the full pack. Copy one, then add a detail only you know about the student.

Extending E
Strengths
- When discussing online safety, [Name] explains acceptable online behaviour clearly and gives examples of how to respond if someone is unkind in a game or chat.Lower KS2
Next step
- Next, [he/she/they] could combine a loop with simple selection, for example repeating a movement and using an if condition to change direction at the edge of the screen.Lower KS2
Confident C
Strengths
- In spreadsheets and databases, [Name] can enter and sort data accurately and use simple formulas or searches to answer questions.Upper KS2
Next step
- A next step is to check whether online content is reliable by comparing it with other sources and looking at who wrote it and why.Upper KS2
Developing D
Strengths
- In computing, [Name] is developing an understanding that the internet is made of connected networks that share information.
Next step
- Next, [he/she/they] could practise choosing two or three key words for a search and checking whether the first results answer the question.
Beginning B
Strengths
- Using sentence stems, [Name] is beginning to explain what safe and respectful online behaviour looks like and who to ask for help.Lower KS2
Next step
- Next, [he/she/they] could work alongside an adult to use a repeat loop that makes an on-screen character draw a shape, such as a square.Lower KS2
Support at home
- Sorting household items, such as socks or toys, into groups and counting them helps your child see how data is collected and organised in computing.
How to write computing comments for KS2 (Years 3-6)
- Name the programming idea the child uses: sequence, repetition (loops), selection with if and else, or variables. Say whether they can predict what their code will do before running it.
- Describe debugging as a process: testing, finding the step where the code goes wrong and fixing it. This reasoning matters more than how polished the finished animation or game looks.
- Lower KS2 safety comments might cover acceptable behaviour online; upper KS2 comments can cover judging whether content is reliable, how search results are ranked, and reporting concerns about content or contact.
Watch out: Avoid treating familiarity with games or devices at home as computing knowledge. Describe what the child understands in lessons, such as how a loop works, and keep home screen use out of the comment.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
What Computing covers
In these comments, computing covers these behaviours:
- understands algorithms, and creates and debugs programs
- uses logical reasoning to predict and explain how programs work, using sequence, selection, repetition and variables in KS2
- uses technology purposefully to create, organise and present content and data
- uses technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, and knows where to go for help
