KS2 Science Report Comments (Years 3-6)
Science covers working scientifically (asking questions, observing, carrying out fair and comparative tests, measuring, recording and concluding) and knowledge from units on living things, materials and physical processes, using the right scientific vocabulary.
Below are 9 sample sentences for KS2 (Years 3-6): one strength and one next step for each of the 4 comment levels (Extending / Confident / Developing / Beginning), plus a tip for families. They are a small selection from the 119 science sentences in the full pack. Copy one, then add a detail only you know about the student.

Extending E
Strengths
- When exploring forces, [Name] independently compares how objects move on different surfaces and explains clearly how magnets attract or repel.Lower KS2
Next step
- To go further, [Name] could use [his/her/their] results to predict new values and then test them, for example with shadow lengths or magnet strength.Lower KS2
Confident C
Strengths
- When separating mixtures, [Name] usually chooses a suitable method, such as sieving, filtering or evaporating, and explains the choice.Upper KS2
Next step
- [Name] should now practise explaining how far [his/her/their] results can be trusted, referring to repeat readings and any results that stand out.Upper KS2
Developing D
Strengths
- With a writing frame, [Name] can write a short conclusion that says what the investigation showed.
Next step
- Next, [Name] could use a checklist of what to change, what to measure and what to keep the same to make [his/her/their] tests fair.
Beginning B
Strengths
- Exploring with a torch and everyday objects, [Name] is beginning to see how a shadow forms when light is blocked.Lower KS2
Next step
- A next step is to label a simple circuit with the words cell, wire, bulb and switch, using a picture word bank.Lower KS2
Support at home
- Simple kitchen experiments, such as testing which objects float or sink in a bowl of water, let your child make and check predictions.
How to write science comments for KS2 (Years 3-6)
- Write about enquiry skills as well as unit content. Topics vary by school, but planning a fair test, measuring carefully and drawing a conclusion from evidence carry across every unit and read well in any term.
- Lower KS2 next steps often concern setting up a fair test, simple tables and bar charts; upper KS2 next steps can involve controlling variables, repeat readings, line graphs and how far results can be trusted.
- Look for the child using evidence: does a conclusion refer to the results, or just repeat the prediction? A next step such as explaining a result using a measurement from the table is clear and doable.
Watch out: Avoid describing only the topic, such as 'enjoyed learning about rocks'. Name an idea or skill the child shows, like grouping rocks by their properties, so the comment says something about science learning.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
