KS1 Science Report Comments (Years 1-2)
Science covers working scientifically (asking questions, observing, carrying out fair and comparative tests, measuring, recording and concluding) and knowledge from units on living things, materials and physical processes, using the right scientific vocabulary.
Below are 9 sample sentences for KS1 (Years 1-2): one strength and one next step for each of the 4 comment levels (Extending / Confident / Developing / Beginning), plus a tip for families. They are a small selection from the 119 science sentences in the full pack. Copy one, then add a detail only you know about the student.

How to write science comments for KS1 (Years 1-2)
- Describe observing and sorting: grouping materials by their properties, naming the parts of a plant or sorting animals by what they eat. These are core KS1 science skills and easy to evidence from a lesson.
- Note the scientific words the child uses, such as 'waterproof', 'transparent' or 'herbivore'. Parents can then reuse those words on a walk, at bath time or in the kitchen.
- Cite one simple test, such as finding which material would make the best umbrella, and what the child did: predicted, watched closely, recorded in a table or pictogram, or explained what happened.
Watch out: Avoid describing only the topic, such as 'enjoyed learning about rocks'. Name an idea or skill the child shows, like grouping rocks by their properties, so the comment says something about science learning.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
