How to write PE comments for KS1 (Years 1-2)
- Name the movement skill, like hopping, skipping, catching a beanbag or holding a balance, rather than sport in general. Families can then practise that single skill, such as catching, in the park.
- Describe how the child uses space in chasing games and travels in different ways around the hall. Control of their body and awareness of others show clearly in these activities.
- In dance and gymnastics, note whether the child can copy, remember and repeat a short pattern of movements, then add an idea of their own. Dancing together at home builds the same memory for movement.
Watch out: Avoid comments on body shape, size, fitness or swimming distances. Describe the skill and what helps, such as watching a partner model a throw, so the comment stays about learning in PE.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
