How to write PSHE and RSHE comments for KS1 (Years 1-2)
- Describe what the child understands from lessons, such as naming feelings, what makes a good friend or who a trusted adult is. Leave out anything about the child's own feelings, family or friendships.
- Put the lesson context in the sentence, such as a story about sharing or a picture sort of safe and unsafe situations, so parents can see it describes classroom learning rather than home life.
- Make next steps about knowledge or a strategy practised in class, such as naming one person to ask for help, rather than a personal or behaviour target.
Watch out: Avoid turning a PSHE comment into a behaviour or wellbeing report. A Developing comment should describe learning still in progress, such as naming ways to keep personal information private online.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
