How to write languages comments for KS1 (Years 1-2)
- Languages are only required from Year 3, so in KS1 report them only if your school introduces a language early. Keep it brief: a greeting, song or counting rhyme the child joins in with.
- For Years 1 and 2, describe listening and copying: repeating words with careful pronunciation, joining in with actions to a song, or responding to a simple classroom instruction in the new language.
- Keep KS1 next steps playful and spoken, such as counting to five or naming three colours in the new language. Reading and writing in the language belong to KS2.
Watch out: Avoid comments that only list topics covered, such as colours and pets. Describe what the child can do with the words, such as asking and answering a question, so families see real communication.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
