How to write languages comments for KS2 (Years 3-6)
- Report the four skills separately: listening, speaking, reading and writing. A child may pronounce new words well but find writing from memory harder, so name one strength and one skill to practise.
- Lower KS2 comments suit greetings, numbers, colours, songs and copying familiar words; upper KS2 comments can cite holding a short conversation, reading short texts, noun genders, verb endings and bilingual dictionary use.
- Many families do not speak the language taught, so make home suggestions about the child teaching you: saying new words aloud, singing a song from class, or labelling objects around the house.
Watch out: Avoid comments that only list topics covered, such as colours and pets. Describe what the child can do with the words, such as asking and answering a question, so families see real communication.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
