How to write PE comments for KS2 (Years 3-6)
- In team games, describe tactics as well as skills: finding space to receive a pass, marking an opponent or choosing when to pass in netball, tag rugby or hockey. Name the game and the principle.
- Comment on how the child evaluates and improves: describing what went well, using a partner's feedback or comparing two attempts. This reflective skill applies across every PE unit, indoors and out.
- For gymnastics and dance sequences, describe control, linking and changes of height, direction or speed. Lower KS2 children link a few movements; upper KS2 children add fluency and work with a partner.
Watch out: Avoid comments on body shape, size, fitness or swimming distances. Describe the skill and what helps, such as watching a partner model a throw, so the comment stays about learning in PE.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
