How to write geography comments for KS2 (Years 3-6)
- Name the map skill: eight compass points and four-figure grid references in lower KS2; six-figure grid references, Ordnance Survey maps, and latitude and longitude in upper KS2.
- Describe how the child explains a process, such as how rivers shape the land or why earthquakes happen, rather than only naming it. Explaining links between places and processes shows real understanding.
- Use fieldwork as evidence: measuring, recording data, sketch maps or graphs from a local study. Fieldwork varies by school, so describe the skill, such as recording traffic counts in a tally chart.
Watch out: Avoid making a memorised list of countries or capitals the whole comment. Add how the child uses that knowledge, such as finding a place in an atlas or comparing two regions.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
