Primary Subject Report Openers and Closers, KS1-KS2
The opening sentence gives parents and carers a short overall picture of the child's learning before the subject paragraphs, and the closing sentence draws the report together with encouragement, thanks or a look forward. Both should cover learning across subjects, not one subject.
Here are 14 samples from the 188 openers and closers in the full pack: one of each for every overall level, then one pair written for each report period.

Tips for openers and closers
- In the autumn interim report, open with how the child has settled into the new year group and begun new topics, and close with a focus for the coming months or a pointer to parents' evening.
- For the spring interim report, open with progress since the autumn and close by naming one or two subjects to build on before the summer. Keep both short, as the subject paragraphs carry the detail.
- In the end-of-year report, look back over the whole year and close with thanks, summer wishes and the move to the next class or, for Year 6, to secondary school. For a child needing much support, name a strength.
