How to write RE comments for KS2 (Years 3-6)
- Describe the depth of explanation: lower KS2 children compare how festivals or rituals are marked in two religions; upper KS2 children explain how beliefs shape the way people live and use religious vocabulary accurately.
- Comment on how the child handles big questions, such as fairness or what gives life meaning: giving a reasoned view of their own and referring to what different religions or worldviews say.
- Mention respectful discussion as part of the subject: listening to views different from their own and responding thoughtfully. Keep it about RE learning, not general behaviour, which belongs elsewhere in the report.
Watch out: Avoid assuming or describing the child's own faith or practice, or suggesting families practise a religion. Keep to what the child has learned about religions and worldviews and how they discuss them.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
