KS1 Maths Report Comments (Years 1-2)
Maths covers number and place value, calculating with the four operations, fractions, measurement, shape, position and direction, and statistics, with reasoning and problem solving running through all of them. Ratio and algebra are added in Year 6.
Below are 9 sample sentences for KS1 (Years 1-2): one strength and one next step for each of the 4 comment levels (Extending / Confident / Developing / Beginning), plus a tip for families. They are a small selection from the 119 maths sentences in the full pack. Copy one, then add a detail only you know about the student.

Extending E
Strengths
- Using number facts taught in class, [Name] solves addition and subtraction problems independently and explains how a known fact helps with a new calculation.
Next step
- A further challenge is to use known facts to reason about larger numbers, for example using 4 + 5 = 9 to work out 40 + 50 and 90 - 50.
Confident C
Strengths
- When working with money, [Name] usually recognises different coins, states their values and can order them from the smallest value to the largest.
Next step
- To build on this, [Name] could practise recalling the 2, 5 and 10 times tables out of order and using them to find division facts.
Developing D
Strengths
- Using a tens frame or cubes, [Name] is learning number bonds to 10 and at times uses them to add and subtract within 20.
Next step
- Practising number bonds to 10 with a tens frame, then number bonds to 20, will help [Name] add and subtract more quickly.
Beginning B
Strengths
- [Name] is beginning to recognise coins and, by handling and sorting them, can match each one to its value in pence.
Next step
- Counting forwards and backwards to 20 along a number track, touching each number, is a useful next step for [Name].
Support at home
- When you go shopping, let your child help add up prices and work out the change, using coins or a written list.
How to write maths comments for KS1 (Years 1-2)
- Name the equipment the child uses, such as a tens frame, number line or Dienes, and whether they still need it. Parents can then use buttons, pasta or coins in the same way at home.
- Pick one concrete strand rather than summing up all of maths: number bonds to 10, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, coins and pence, or telling the time. Each gives families an obvious game to play.
- Include a reasoning point even for young children, such as explaining how they know 7 and 3 make 10. It shows parents that talking about a method matters as much as the answer.
Watch out: Avoid letting times tables or mental arithmetic stand for the whole subject. Describe what the child does in one specific strand, such as fractions or measurement, and give a next step they can practise.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
