How to write geography comments for KS1 (Years 1-2)
- Cite a map the child uses: the four countries and capital cities of the UK, the seven continents and five oceans, or a map of the school grounds with a simple key.
- Describe vocabulary for features, such as beach, hill, river, port or farm, and whether the child can sort them into human and physical. Families can name the same features on a walk.
- Mention position and direction language, like near, far, left, right, north and south, used in fieldwork or on a playground route. A next step could be giving directions to a partner.
Watch out: Avoid making a memorised list of countries or capitals the whole comment. Add how the child uses that knowledge, such as finding a place in an atlas or comparing two regions.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
