KS1 Computing Report Comments (Years 1-2)
Computing covers algorithms and programming, predicting and debugging, logical reasoning, using technology to create and present content and data, and using technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, including knowing where to go for help.
Below are 9 sample sentences for KS1 (Years 1-2): one strength and one next step for each of the 4 comment levels (Extending / Confident / Developing / Beginning), plus a tip for families. They are a small selection from the 119 computing sentences in the full pack. Copy one, then add a detail only you know about the student.

Extending E
Strengths
- [Name] programs an on-screen character to follow a set of instructions and goes further by finding a shorter way to reach the same place.
Next step
- A next step is to send a floor robot along a longer route with several turns, planning the whole sequence of commands before pressing go.
Confident C
Strengths
- In computing, [Name] gives an on-screen character a sequence of instructions and often predicts correctly where it will end up.
Next step
- A useful next step is to plan a floor robot route on paper first, drawing an arrow for each command before entering them.
Developing D
Strengths
- [Name] is learning that an algorithm is a set of precise instructions and can follow one step by step with a model to copy.
Next step
- Laying arrow cards on the floor to show each move would help [him/her/them] work out a floor robot route before keying in the commands.
Beginning B
Strengths
- With small-group support, [Name] is starting to understand that an algorithm is a list of clear instructions, such as the steps for washing hands.
Next step
- A helpful next step is to play direction games, such as guiding a partner with forward and turn instructions, before using a floor robot.
Support at home
- Talking together about which information should stay private online, such as your address, school or passwords, helps your child stay safe.
How to write computing comments for KS1 (Years 1-2)
- Describe programming a floor robot or an on-screen character in plain words: planning a route, entering commands in order and fixing a mistake. Leave out device and app brand names.
- Include an online safety point the child can explain, such as keeping personal information private and telling a trusted adult if something worries them. Families can repeat the same rule at home.
- Mention practical digital skills such as taking a photo, typing a sentence and saving work so it can be found again. These are concrete, easy to observe in a lesson and clear to parents.
Watch out: Avoid treating familiarity with games or devices at home as computing knowledge. Describe what the child understands in lessons, such as how a loop works, and keep home screen use out of the comment.
The scale describes how independently the child shows the learning. Extending suits independently, applies it in new contexts and explains reasoning; Confident suits usually and with occasional support; Developing suits sometimes, or with a model or word mat; Beginning names what the child does with adult support. Show the point through one piece of learning rather than writing the scale word itself.
What Computing covers
In these comments, computing covers these behaviours:
- understands algorithms, and creates and debugs programs
- uses logical reasoning to predict and explain how programs work, using sequence, selection, repetition and variables in KS2
- uses technology purposefully to create, organise and present content and data
- uses technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, and knows where to go for help
